Germany just celebrated the 25th anniversary of the fall of Berlin wall. The Germany's east and the west were finally reunited and became one in 1989 after losing the war that Adolf Hitler started. (The Berlin wall was a concrete barrier running 155 kms.)
Now, in the Philippines as per Wikipedia:
"Finally, on November 24, 1992, the American Flag was lowered in Subic for the last time... This withdrawal marked the first time since the 16th century that no foreign military forces were present in the Philippines."
The Americans took over the facilities in 1899 after kicking out the Spaniards in a mock naval battle. The U.S. regarded the Philippines as their oldest ally in Asia and so were part of everyday lives of people in Olongapo and Angeles City if not the whole nation.
It reached global attention when the Senate voted down its extension. It was over for the Americans but a new life for the Philippines and its sovereignity. To those who were directly affected were raising hell about their future. They felt that their lives will be over as soon as the Americans leave the US bases. They were wrong of course. We made Subic and Clark a world class freeport providing thousands of jobs to people with a feeling of self-worth and self-reliance.
