“You complete me, you are my life. You are my world. You are my happiness…etc”. Romantic, yes, but I don’t buy those mushy lines. In fact, I would be scared to death if I were the recipient of that kind of love. It is such a burden--an enormous responsibility--on my shoulder.
Many may not agree with me, but I believe that no one can complete you but yourself. No one can make you really happy but yourself..its your state of mind. You were born alone with your thought , you will die alone with your thought. Nobody can really be there but you, if you know what I mean.
That kind of, love is suffocating to say the least. We all have varied interests, that’s why we have different sets of friends for each interest. You and your love one should be free to pursue your respective dreams/interests. This way, you both grow and in the process, become better persons, better partners.
It is in this context that I am sharing with you this poem about marriage and relationship by Khalil Gibran, a famous Lebanese thinker and poet.
you were born together, and together you shall be forevermore.
but let there be spaces in your togetherness,
and let the winds of the heavens dance between you.
love one another but make not a bond of love:
let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.
fill each other's cup but drink not from one cup.
give one another of your bread but eat not from the same loaf.
sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each one of you be alone,
even as the strings of a lute are alone though they quiver with the same music.
give your hearts, but not into each other's keeping.
